Welcome to the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society
The mission of the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society (HSAHS) is to maintain, manage and operate an organization to acquire, preserve, display and study historical materials, objects and artifacts relating to the area surrounding Harbor Springs, Michigan.
The Harbor Springs Area Historical Society was founded in 1990 as a volunteer organization dedicated to preserving the history of the Harbor Springs area. In keeping with its purpose, HSAHS volunteers organize events and activities which promote the preservation and protection of the area’s past in order to ensure a legacy for the future.
- Organizes bi-monthly Harbor History Talk programs
- Provides educational programs and tours for school groups
- Publishes a quarterly newsletter which features historical topics of interest
- Organizes Shay Days the third week each July. This annual event celebrates the achievements of local inventor Ephraim Shay, as well as the area’s railroad and lumbering history.
- Sponsors an oral history program
- Organizes special history-themed events throughout the year

A Museum Grows in Harbor Springs...
The Museum will feature exhibition spaces and an educational gallery specifically for children and families with hands-on activities. A research library will be available for studying genealogy, viewing city documents and reading about the area’s history. Meeting spaces will be available for community use, plus the museum will house a gift shop and staff offices.
